Online Cello Lessons

I offer online cello lessons on Zoom. These are private one-on-one lessons for those who want to study with me but are not located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. If you are unable to find a satisfactory local teacher, online lessons may be a good option for you. Zoom cello lessons offer the convenience of having an experienced expert helping you get further with your cello playing in your own home, wherever you live. The drawback of online lessons is that we cannot play together online, but if needed I can supply recordings so you can practice playing with a rhythm or accompaniment track. Through online lessons I can help with solo, chamber music and orchestral repertoire as long as I have a PDF of your music.

Adult Students

I find that online lessons work especially well for adult students since attention span, retention of information and motivation are not issues for them. I recommend weekly lessons for beginning adult students. More experienced students may have lessons every other week or so. I strongly recommend hour long lessons for adults at any level. See my Rates & Scheduling page for pricing.

School Age Students

Kids in general will have more success with in-person lessons, but when that is not an option I'm willing to teach kids online. Depending on the age and personality of the child some parental involvement may be necessary to help with tuning the instrument, technical issues, and to keep them on track with their studies. Young kids need someone to attend their lessons and supervise their practicing. I require kids to have weekly lessons and they can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes long. Older and more experienced kids will do better with longer lessons. See my Rates & Scheduling page for pricing.

Requirements for Online Cello Lessons

  1. A computer, iPad or some other device instead of a phone to use for lessons. The picture on the phone is too small and you will not be able to see what I am showing you well enough. Make sure your computer is one with a build-in camera such as most laptops or has an attached webcam.

  2. A reliable Internet connection with sufficent speed. Some Wifi connections may not have sufficient speed and reliability and a direct connection to your router may be necessary. I can provide advice on how to do this.

  3. A Zoom account. This is necessary so you can adjust your settings, but it can be the free account since I will be the host. You must adjust your audio settings for “original sound.” Without this setting Zoom filters out all the lower notes and I will not be able to hear you play the G and C strings at all. I can help you figure this out before your first lesson.

  4. Some kind of extra microphone may be needed. There are cheap ones for your device available on Amazon, or you can use a headset with a microphone.
